life's a beach. or, a parking garage with rats.

Well, here I am with another post about nothing.

Yesterday was Amazon Prime Day, which is basically a national holiday in Matt's mind.  By mid-morning there were a few things in our cart and then just when I thought the purchasing was over, I saw that Matt had added one more thing.

A "super loud powerful train sound truck horn."  Of course. Totally necessary and likely illegal.

Someone had gone a little Prime Day crazy.  Not to worry, after dinner last night Matt's fiscally responsible side prevailed and he canceled the horn purchase.

Today was chugging along as an average Wednesday until I went out to my car on my lunch break and there was a pit bull in the lobby of my office.  And I don't mean the rapper.  Also, I don't work at a vet, just an old building in the center of a questionable neighborhood with a very sensitive automatic sliding door.

There was a man holding a leash half-halfheartedly calling after the dog, apparently named Sugar, but I hightailed it to the parking garage because I am wary of dogs I don't know, and Sugar appear strong and not well-trained.

As the elevator opened on the third floor of the parking garage, I glanced at the trashcan beside the door and do you know what was sitting on top of it?

A RAT.

A giant, disgusting rat, its beady eyes staring right at me.  The tail was at least 8 inches long and the body was nearly the size of Sugar.  You could have put Sugar's leash on it and taken it for a walk.

I rushed to my car, locked the doors, and contemplated never returning to the office again.

But someone's gotta help pay those Amazon bills.

This is also my first full week of work since May, thanks to my strategy of saving most of my PTO for the weeks between Memorial Day and July 4th.  I think I'm going to struggle with the whole five day thing.  Last week I had to work for four whole days and by Thursday morning I decided to just phone it in in the hair department and wear it in a ponytail.  I NEVER do that, and then I couldn't decide which earrings to wear, so I put a different one in each ear and told myself I'd make a decision before I left the house.

You can probably see which unfortunate direction this is headed.

That decision did not get made until I did a final lip gloss check in the rear view mirror before I went into the office and realized I was still wearing two different earrings.  Thank goodness I caught it then because I had an employee evaluation first thing and I can only imagine how I'd feel if my boss gave me my annual review while wearing a pearl in one ear and some snazzy fake rhinestones in the other.

So, I spent last Thursday night and Friday at my in-laws' shore house.

I was so excited to spend the whole day sitting on the beach, and even though it was raining, I walked down to the beach and set up my chair in the pouring rain while wearing a sweatshirt because I was DETERMINED.  Eventually the huge storm clouds blew over, as I knew they would, and it turned out to be a beautiful afternoon.

I read my book and took a long walk in the surf and shared an entire bag of Twizzlers with my sister-in-law and "jumped" my nephew over the waves until my shoulders were sore.

It was very relaxing and I didn't spend one second thinking about my earrings.

Or rats.

I might need to spend this Friday at the beach too.

You definitely need more beach time! I would see rats in DC more often than I liked, and I always got super freaked out. Once one "jumped" out from a shrub while I was walking with my husband. I was so scared I scratched my husband's arm up, and I literally attempted to jump on top of him in order to make my escape. Not my finest moment, so I'm impressed with your composure. Also, pit bulls?! Hopefully he takes care of the rodents.

Too bad you didn't have Sugar with you in the parking garage. Pit bulls aren't scared of rats. My husband's cousin had two pit bulls that once partially tore off the fender of a car trying to get at a cat that was hiding in the wheel well of the car. Lovely animals.

We used to see rats way more than I would like at our old house, mostly when our neighbors would poison them (this happens a lot in farming areas) and the rats would get all groggy from the poison and wander around near the house during the day. The worst, though, was the time (on our wedding anniversary!) that we cleaned out our water cisterns outside because our water had been tasting bad and we found no less than a DOZEN dead, decomposing rats. In our drinking water. Our UV filter proved its worth in that episode, because no one got sick. Except for all the people who read the post I wrote about that. And probably everyone who read that just now. You're welcome!

I usually write Prime Day off but this year I bought a comforter and I've very happy with that choice :)
I probably would've tried to pet the dog (depending on how the human looked) but I'd have screamed and ran from the rat.
And then totally not come back to the office. Hahaha.
You're braver than me ;)

Yep... someone has to pay for Amazon Prime day... even through all the struggles ;)

That's funny about the earrings. And not so funny about the rat! The beach looks really nice!

OMG, seriously how does all this stuff happen to you?! You should totally write a book. I think I've told you that before, but I'm so serious!

I see a lot of rats in Chicago, they don't bug me too much. None in our alley though... because we have a snake in our backyard. I've been told by our gardener it's a non poisonous garter snake, so we let him chill and he eats rats. Trade off?

I am so jealous of your beach day! I've been craving a relaxing day at the beach. Not that taking a 2 year old would be relaxing, but whatever. In my fantasy I also have a live-in nanny. ANYWAY, I would have screamed my head off at the rat. I can't handle those!

yay for prime day! And boo to rats and strange dogs. I can just imagine you sitting there in the rain waiting for it to stop, hehe. Fun to have some beach days, and I would share a bag of candy with you any day!

Oh hell no! I would have screamed if I saw a giant rat! Yay for rat free beach time though! I have no idea how I'm going to go back to any days of work a week let alone 5...

I can't with the rats! I had to live in a place (moved out of there as soon as I could!!) that had rats and it was one of the worst experiences of my life.

What'd you end up scoring off of Amazon day? I only bought a few books (but the temptation was there to buy MORE)
