Yesterday was long and rainy and dreary, so I stopped at Ikea on
my way home from work because nothing can make a gray day brighter like some
unnecessary but competitively priced throw pillows.
Unfortunately, in an unprecedented turn of events, I didn’t
see anything worth buying at Ikea. And
so I decided to head home, except Ikea is in the midst of a remodel and I
couldn’t find the exit.
COULD. NOT. FIND. IT.
COULD. NOT. FIND. IT.
I wandered around the home textiles department for a sweet
forever and even texted Michelle to tell her that I was lost in Ikea. Apparently I chose to visit
during the stage in the remodeling process when the EXIT signs have not yet
been moved to accurately reflect the updated exits.
So that was fun.
I may or may not have made a pit stop at the cafe to order myself a plate of Swedish meatballs because WHEN IN ROME. Or WHEN IN A SWEDISH RETAIL STORE, as the case may be.
I may or may not have made a pit stop at the cafe to order myself a plate of Swedish meatballs because WHEN IN ROME. Or WHEN IN A SWEDISH RETAIL STORE, as the case may be.
I finally, and I do mean finally, made it to the parking lot. I decided to take the back roads to my apartment, which
have less far traffic but involve several four way stops.
Listen. I think it’s time that we as Americans to start
behaving at four way stops the way God and civil engineers intended. There are most certainly times when it is appropriate to let
a car pull out in front of you or wave them along. A four way stop sign is not one of those times.
Letting someone go out of turn at a four way stop throws off
the mojo of the entire intersection. I’m
talking to you, lady in the blue Subaru station wagon who waved on FIVE CARS
while we waited at a stop sign.
I came home, made myself a bowl of turkey chili and a glass
of wine, and watched Ellen Degeneres and Bill Cosby commencement speeches on
youtube because the excitement around here NEVER ENDS.
While one video was loading I clicked over to the local
news website to catch up on all the goings on, and saw this.
Well, hmm.
I'm not so sure I like what this says about me!!

I LOVE the food at Ikea!! SO good :)
I usually go there to buy picture frames and end up with random items like plates or shelves...can't leave empty-handed!
i can totally see getting lost in an ikea - they are so confusing, even with exit signs! i can't believe you didn't find anything. i never get outta there without buying at least a few little things :)

I wonder what the point of four-way stops is, anyway...do counties/cities save money by not operating a light system there?
oh my gosh! I received this text last week from my older brother, who lives in the Philly burbs (so same Ikea): "Help! Lost in Ikea!" I laughed because even on a good day that store confuses me, so I can't even imagine it undergoing construction! Glad you got out safely!
I get lost in IKEA on a good day :) But I have also been there during a remodel...not fun.
So sad you did not find anything worth purchasing...better luck next time!
I always manage to get lost in IKEA whether they are remodeling or not. The arrows on the floor are not helpful.
Haha glad you found your way out! I've never eaten at Ikea..I must try the meatballs! Also I love Ellen's commencement speech!
Laura!!
I love listening to bloggers vent, it really makes my day to know I'm not the only one who speaks their mind :-) love this post!!
XOX Happy Thursday friend!

Oh girl, this is hysterical. Trapped in ikea? Meatballs & the excitement never ending? So hilarious.
haha oh my gosh! I so don't like people who let people go at the four way stops! It is so annoying! I also just read your about me and thought I was the only one who didn't like carbonated beverages! :-)
Sounds like a long day...and interesting about the recommendation...lol!
Hey Laura, I laughed when you said, "The way God and civil engineers intended". People don't know how to drive and ESPECIALLY at 4 way stops!! I've never heard of any law saying a turning signal is optional but low and behold it is for some!
The Ikea in New Jersey by me was a mist a remodel last summer and I got lost too. I got lost in the lighting/dishware/bathrooms because they tore down walls but then were putting up new partitions and even now I'm still not sure of the "right" way I should be walking through it because of those extra walls that are sooo pointless!! =P
Anywho I hope you have a great weekend! With the whole Google reader thing, they said GFC might shut down as well, but it is not confirmed. I think people are making more of this than they should be. It shouldn't be that much of a crisis but oh well!
hahahaha I think, wait, I know, IKEA hides their exists on purpose and I find it kind of genius. Like you have to walk through the entire store and not buy something. It's a dare or something, which you passed, but I never do and end up walking out with a cart of crap I don't need. Oh well
OH WOW! The internet says the darndest things!
i LOVE ikea! i love wandering around and getting lost in the possibilities. unfortunately, i have zero creativity so i have to drag my husband along with me so he can tell me what looks good and what doesn't.
oh my gosh the heroine recommendation, HILARIOUS.
And girl i get lost in ikea just because i've only been once ha.!
I spent an entire afternoon last week in Ikea trying to buy throw pillows and I also left empty handed. So lame. I bought some at Cost Plus World Market a few days ago and they are cute and colorful but I had to force myself to purchase them b/c they were so much more expansive than those dang Ikea ones.
Anyway, AMEN about 4 way stops.
hahah, I have totally been caught in IKEA before. HOW DO I GET OUT OF HERE?!?!
Oh my gosh, the last time I was at Ikea we couldn't get out either!
Haha. Oh no, I can't believe you couldn't find the exit. That's such a funny story. :-)
oh gosh, I feel your Ikea anxiety of getting lost. I went in there for 1 thing and was lost of a good 15-20 minutes trying to find the exit. I didn't even have the excuse that they were remodeling, I just straight up didn't know how to get out of that crazy place! And I agree completely on the stop sign, waved on cars at a stop sign? That's just unheard of and her license should be revoked immediately!
I get lost in Ikea even when the exits are correctly labeled!!!
IKEA is the best and worst! It is intentionally confusing so you go "oh look pretty!" and get distracted from your goal - Half the time I forget why I am there!
you are hilarious! i love ikea--but even on normal days, that store is hard to navigate. swedish meatballs make up for it :)
also, do i see you live in philly? that's where my family is originally from! pa girl at heart :) but i must admit, this florida weather is stealing me away slowly....
xo,
kristyn
Oh my gosh when Ikea is under any sort of construction it's impossible to find the way through!! It drives me crazy. I think Bill and Ellen are the perfect antidotes.
Worst thing ever is getting Lost in Ikea! Its so big aha. Glad you eventually found the exit :P x

Ha! I just started following you via bloglovin! Those little peppers you posted below are killer if you stuff them with spinach dip! Seriously.
Hahah...sounds like a very exciting weekday to me. ;)
I wish I lived by an Ikea! The closest one to me is 8 hours away! :( Though getting lost in one doesn't sound too fun.
Yeesh! Maybe pour another glass of wine after that one!
Thank you for visiting my blog. ;-)

Hahaha! Thanks local news for the suggestion?
I've never been to an Ikea. Can you believe it?!
I got lost in IKEA that first time I went :) And I always eat at stores, the cafeterias are always calling to me!
I can't believe IKEA let you down...in more ways than one! BOO!
Sounds like an interesting day! Funny ad hahaha.... I just came across your blog and I'm your newest follower :) Would you mind checking out our blog and (if you like) following back via GFC and Bloglovin'? We also have a giveaway going on right now! xx

I had to laugh at your IKEA story! Even with exit signs I find them confusing :)
And I'm pretty sure the meatballs are a must every visit.
The last time I was at Ikea I didn't find anything worth buying either.. it was extremely strange! Glad you made it out!
Oh my gosh! I get lost in Ikea when it's not even remodeling! I can only imagine!!! I do love me some throw pillows though. I can usually find something unnecessary to buy. I think last time I went I bought a mini vase and a fake flower. :)
Too funny. I hear you though, Ikea can be sketchy to get out of, even without a remodel. I tried to take a "short cut" once to avoid all the display rooms, and ended up wandering around for a good half hour trying to get to the tills. Not fun haha.
I hate when I go shopping and can't find what I need/want. SO frustrating!!! Happy hump day!

omg, that's happened to me too XD they need to put maps up for us directionally challenged people! (I always get a cinnamon bun, mmm)
I am loving your blog and this story! The first time I EVER went to Ikea, I got off at the wrong floor. This was with a full cart and no bags, since I was unaware that Ikea does not give you bags. I wandered the parking lot like a homeless person, almost bursting into tears because I was convinced I would never find my car. I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets a little lost and seeks solace in their food! (Dessert for me though, oops).
I HEART IKEA!!! Exceptttt the brilliant idea they had about making a maze. Those swedish selling people decided to make it so hard not to walk out immediately... you must walk by everything that is super cheap but you don't need so you can think about buying it!
I still love it though ;)
LOL on the headline recommendation.
Glad you found your way out of IKEA, I'm still one of the few people who have never been to one (they're not around my place). :)
Happy Wednesday.
Bhahaha!!! Our Ikea went through a remodel a 5 or so months ago and it was A MAZE to get out of! I hear ya! :)
Haha, I love this. Got to love Ikea as well!!!
Lol. I had someone find my blog by searching "goose egg Jesus" because I mean obviously that's what my blog is about!! ;)
OMG. This has totally happened to me before. I bet it happens more often than not, because IKEA is CRAZY!
The same thing happened to me at Costco once! They were doing remodeling and I'd never been to this particular Costco before and I got completely lost and couldn't find my way out! Embarrassing to admit but it took more time to find the check-outs and exit than do actually shopping :P

LOLOLOL that blue Subaru lady killed me! I agree...just go with the natural flow of things!
Haha totally been lost inside a store like! I get so frustrated! Haha.
