february books

Well it's time for the monthly book linkup with Steph and Jana, and I'm excited to see what everyone has been reading because I need some inspiration.  I haven't read much yet in 2018, but it was freezing cold and rainy on Saturday and I read an entire book.  I picked up The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time at the thrift store the other weekend for a quarter, and I'd say I got my money's worth.  The narrator is a fifteen year old boy with autism, and reading the book from his perspective was really interesting. He discovers a murdered dog in his neighborhood, and begins a quest to find out who did it, but ends up uncovering a lot more.

This month I also read Girl, Wash Your Face, by Rachel Hollis.  Rachel is one of my favorite people to follow on Facebook and Instagram, and I've read her fiction series and have her cookbook, so I was excited to read her first non-fiction book.

I'll be honest, I find a lot of books like this to be major eye rollers.  But I really enjoyed this one.  Rachel shares a lot about her family's experience with foster care and adoption, which I found interesting because I work in that field.  She didn't have an easy childhood and graduated high school early so she could move on her own to LA, where she worked her way up in an event planning company until she could start her own, and now she owns a multi-million dollar media company.  I appreciated her advice, and her motivation and determination is contagious.

That's it for me this month.  I just started Laura Bush's book Spoken from the Heart, and I have War Brides on my nightstand to start.  Any great recommendations?

I can barely do dog stories at all, let alone this type of dog story (though I've heard good things about it!).

I read maybe half of War Brides awhile back...if you like WWII fiction, it's perfect.

I'm reading Sourdough right now and it's starting off pretty good: https://www.amazon.com/Sourdough-Novel-Robin-Sloan/dp/0374203105

Is it wrong that I'm excited about staying in and reading all weekend?

In the category of foster care and adoption (but a novel): "The Language of Flowers," by Vanessa Diffenbaugh.

I've never really known what The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time was about, but am going to add it to my tbr now!

I've never heard of that Wash Your face book - that sounds like something I need to read myself.

I had to analyse The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime in high school so I have very harsh feelings about it, haha! High school ruined so many books for me.

The Girl with 7 Names about a girl that fled North Korea is so good! Very interesting about the world of North Korea, especially since this is current history going on right now.

Both of these books sound great! I've heard the "The Curious Case of..." is also a very good and meaningful play, too. I'd definitely like to check that out! I've never heard of the other author but her nonfiction work sounds really interesting!

I read Curious Incident years and years ago but it's one of those books that sticks with you. I do want to see the state adaptation.
